"Fear Not" is the ninth episode of the first season of the CBS drama series "Touched by an Angel." This episode is Randy Travis' first of seven appearances on the show.

Plot

A small town church is putting on its Christmas pageant, and little Serena (Ra'ven Kelly) desperately wants to be the angel. Her slightly retarded friend Joey (Paul Wittenberg), must come to terms with the fact that Serena is dying of a heart condition. Joey is pathologically afraid of the dark--his parents went out into the night and never came back. Since then, his older brother Wayne (Randy Travis) has been his caregiver.

One day, after Serena starts choking, Joey carries her to see Wayne. Wayne lets Serena lay on his bed while his mother comes. Joey is so crushed that he destroys the Christmas pagaent set. After finding out, Wayne lectures Joey, stating there isn't going to be a Christmas pagaent now.

Wayne tells Monica that he's resented looking after Joey. He holds God responsible for his lousy life, but Monica tells him that Joey really needs him now.

When Serena dies the night of the pageant, Joey is led to the church by a bright star. Wayne is there, too. Monica takes Serena's place as the angel in the pageant. When the rope supporting her breaks, Monica rises with glory and power and the entire is awed by her angelic revelation and message: "Fear Not."
