He was selected by theSeattle Seahawks with the sixth overall pick in the first round of the1997 NFL Draft , a pick obtained from theTampa Bay Buccaneers in a trade. Jones leftFlorida State University prior to his senior season after being selected to the second teamCollege Football All-America Team .Since joining the Seahawks he has started all 168 career games. In his first season with the Seahawks Jones was honored with a consensus first-team All-Rookie selection. He was named the NFL rookie of the month for October 1997 - no other offensive lineman has been so honored. Following the 1999 season Walter became the first Seahawks
offensive lineman to play in thePro Bowl . Jones has been voted to the Pro Bowl 8 times in his career, including the last 7 in a row. He has been selected to the NFLAll-Pro team 6 times, including 5 times to the first team. In 2006, "Sporting News " rated him number one on their list of the "NFL's Best 101 Players". He is widely considered to be one of the best offensive tackles in the history of the NFL.Before the start of the 2005 season he signed a 7-year $50 million contract with the Seahawks, which included more than $20 million in bonuses. Prior to that contract, Jones played under the franchise tag a record three times (the maximum allowable times for any player under the NFL's Collective Bargaining Agreement).
Jones and his wife Valeria have twins, daughter Waleria and son Walterius.
