The band is a result of a lifelong friendship between Brian Harding and Jason Roberts, of whom formed the band while attending
Appalachian State University . Following their graduation, the power-duo temporarily disbanded with Jason joining theBen Kweller Band while Brian relocated toNYC to continue on with their creation. During Jason's stint withBen Kweller , the lead guitarist met and became close with band-memberJohn Kent of whom went on to formBlackland Records located inCeleste ,TX . After hearing some of the band's work, John was immediately hooked on the sound and quickly signed the band in2005 , along with Jason who quit his day job to jump back on board [ [http://www.hymnsband.com/info Hymns » info ] ] .During recording sessions at "The Vault" (
Blackland Records ), the band met up with Matt Shaw and Tony Kent, two local musicans who shared the band's common background of being childhood friends. This record release generated national attention with publications such asSpin Magazine ,The New Yorker , andMTV News taking notice. With their newly acquired popularity, the band appeared with popular artists includingBen Kweller ,The Lemonheads ,Hot Hot Heat ,Beck ,Sam Roberts Band , theRedwalls , andButch Walker .Amidst national tours, the band returned to the studio in
