José Marques da Silva (
Porto , October 18, 1869 -Porto , June 06, 1947) was a Portuguese architect. After initiating his studies in the Academy of Fine Arts in Porto, Marques da Silva went toParis , where he completed his studies between 1889 and 1896. Upon his return, Marques da Silva quickly gained prestige as architect, reflected in several prizes obtained by him. In 1907 he became professor of Architecture of the School of Fine Arts of Porto and, after 1913, became director of the same institution.Marques da Silva has a vast body of work, specially in his native Porto and Northern Portugal. His projects range from the French-influenced
Beaux-Arts architecture ofSão Bento Train Station (1904) andSão João National Theatre (1909) to theArt Deco of the main house of theSerralves Foundation (1925).His daughter, Maria José Marques da Silva, and his daughter's husband, David Moreira da Silva, were architects. The documents, projects, drawings, photographs and scale models pertaining to the work of the three architects are kept in the Instituto Marques da Silva in Porto, housed in the former atelier of the architect.
