2008 Australian Carrera Cup Championship

The 2008 Australian Carrera Cup is the sixth Australian Carrera Cup Championship. The season began on February 21, 2008 at the Clipsal 500 and will finish on October 26 at the Gold Coast Indy 300. The season consisted of nine rounds across five different states.

This year Carrera Cup will again race alongside the V8 Supercars and will feature at the five largest Australian motorsport events - the Clipsal 500 Adelaide, FORMULA 1™ ING Australian Grand Prix, L&H 500 Philip Island, SupercheapAuto Bathurst 1000 and the Gold Coast Indy 300.

Championship rounds will also be staged at Wakefield Park in NSW, Barbagallo Raceway, Perth, Sandown International Raceway, Victoria and Queensland Raceway near Brisbane.

The drivers represent a cross section of young, talented stars of the future; some of the most experienced and successful drivers in Australia and a contingent of leading privateers who double as the fastest amateur drivers in the country.

The championship has also developed as a springboard for young aspirants into the V8 Supercar Championship Series and other international competitions.

In 2007 fans were thrilled by names such as Craig Baird, Alex Davison, Marcus Marshall and David Reynolds, witnessed the emergence of young guns David Russell, David Wall and Dean Fiore, and savoured the skill of hardenedracers Rodney Jane and Rodney Forbes.

While the overall Championship is the focus for the professional drivers, the Pilatus Challenge has developed into another interesting competition with intense rivalry behind the front pack for the entire privateer racers.

This award is for amateur drivers over 30 years of age with the top three scoring sought after prizes at season's end.

Two other highly acclaimed awards are the Michelin Rookie of the Year; for drivers in their first full season of Porsche motorsport and the Mobil 1 Hard Charger for the driver who makes up the most number of race positions at each round and through the full season.

Carrera Cup Australia is the premium sports car category in Australia, and that level of competition is matched only in the level of corporate support which backs the category.

In 2008 the Championship will be supported by such premium brands as Porsche, Michelin, Mobil 1, ZF Sachs, Pilatus, Screen Offset Printing, Web Resource, Adidas, Gatorade and The Autograph Shop. They are all quality brands dedicated to making Carrera Cup Australia bigger and more successful.

In 2008 Carrera Cup will again be broadcast on the Seven Network and Fox Sports in Australia and distributed internationally via the web at Joost TV.
