George Nickson

The Rt Rev George Nickson was an Anglican Bishop in the first third of the 20th century. Born on 9 May 1864 [“Who was Who” 1897-1990 London, A & C Black, 1991 ISBN 071363457X] and educated at Trinity College, Dublin and Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, he was ordained in 1889 ["Ordinations. Ely. (Official Appointments and Notices) " The Times Saturday, Jun 22, 1889; pg. 17; Issue 32732; col D] . His first post was as a curate at " Holy Trinity, Cambridge" after which he was successively Vicar of "St Benedict, Cambridge", "St John the Divine Fairfield, Liverpool" [ [http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=chsa1yn0aw8 Amateur video of the soon to be demolished church] ] and "St Andrew's, Southport" before being appointed Rural Dean of West Derby in 1905. In 1906 he became the first Suffragan Bishop of Jarrow [ The Times, Saturday, May 05, 1906; pg. 11; Issue 38012; col E "King’s approval of Nickson’s appointment"] . In 1914 he was translated to Bristol ["New Bishop Of Bristol. Promotion Of Another Suffragan" The Times Saturday, May 02, 1914; pg. 10; Issue 40513; col E] . A man whose dedication to his ministry lead to occasional collapses [The Times, Friday, Feb 25, 1949; pg. 7; Issue 51315; col E Obituary-"Bishop Nickson Unsparing Service To The Church"] ,he died on 26 April 1924.
