Creaturebreeder is a Flash-based online community that simulates realistic breeding of virtual pets through successive generations, by the artificial selection of traits. Conceived in 2005 by brothers Aemon and Max Cannon, Creaturebreeder is a grassroots community that reflects an independent-gaming spirit.

Gameplay

Breeding

In Creaturebreeder, there are pet archetypes that typically represent a blend between actual species, for example the design behind the "Brumble Bear" comes from both a dog and a bear. Each archetype contains a set amount of dominant and recessive genes that are expressed visually by variables that alter the shape, color, and other features of the creature. Just as dog-breeders in real life, users may breed towards certain goals; if two parents have a trait in common, it is more likely the offspring will express the same trait. Farms

Creatures visually inhabit an area on each users page, termed a farm. Farms are customized by purchasing various accessories from the virtual store. Each user has the ability to earn virtual currency termed "Farm Bucks" through either buying and selling creatures or slowly accumulating them on a magic bonsai tree. "Farm Bucks" are typically used to decorate one's farm or acquire more creatures from other users. Farms are not only a representation of status within Creaturebreeder, but a user's creativity as well; farms become a showcase for talented decorators and breeders alike.

Community

Creaturebreeder is marked by a tenacious community. The site originally had no forum, however users setup an official place to discuss the game, it later became hosted and incorporated by the site. To this day, it is the users that ultimately control the forum, as they constructed their own hierarchy of administrators that govern the community as well as provide essential information to new users. Creaturebreeder has hosted community events that include design contests for the next store accessory, although the majority of events are designed from the ground up by the community itself (including a contest to design the best Creaturebreeder banner). ub-Breeds

"Sub-breed" is a term coined by the Creaturebreeder community. It denotes a specific appearance within a creature that has been bred towards, over many generations. The community has organized an official list of "sub-breeds"; each breed has been named and credited to the user that brought it into existence. Examples of these breeds include the famous "eye-brow fuzzy", the "neck-tie turtles" and the "honey-pot bears".
