website =Roy, better known in the area as Roytown, is a community that sets about 2 miles south of
Castor, Louisiana in theUnited States . Roy was built up around asawmill that came into the area at the latter end of the early 1990's. The sawmill was owned and put there by Martin Timber Co., who's owner was Roy O. Martin--the sawmill and community were named after him.History
A
Grocery Store andGas Station were directly across the road from the sawmill--a mile south was aGeneral Store . The Grocery Store was referred to as a commissary. At the time quarters were built for sawmill workers along the side of Hwy 153 along with aChurch . A majority of people living around and behind the sawmill worked for it. TheKansas City Southern Railroad had a track that ran near the sawmill--the sawmill had aspur line that connected into the KCS track for shipping lumber. In 1952 a
tornado came off ofBlack Lake Bayou , about 7 miles south of Castor, and moved north destroying the sawmill and housing quarters around it. Only the Gas Station, Grocery Store and nearby General Store survived the storm. The sawmill was rebuilt--but Overtime the sawmill changed owners--an employee death in the late '90's resulted in the
lumber company shutting down. The sawmill still stands today. The Grocery Store caught fire and so much damage was done it was eventually tore down.
During the '90's the Gas Station, which had become a tire and lube shop, also shut down. The
dilapidated Gas Station still stands. The General Store was shut down in the 70's--and tore down in the 80's, another General Store was built behind it--but it went out of business in 1990. It still stands in dilapidated condition.
Others have tried to cater to the community including a Gas Station in the 70's, a burger shop in the late 80's and a couple of bars.
Present Day
Most of the area was open country and now is dense
Pine thickets.Businesses in the area today are the same gas station and bar that have been in the area since the 70's. Another bar moved into the area in the late 90's.
Roy uses the same
ZIP code and phone numbers as residents from Castor and the kids in the area go to Castor High School--it's never been established as a township, but is shown onLouisiana maps.Alberta, another community in the area, sets against Roy's northern side. As with Roy, Alberta was never established as a township. Alberta is home of the Alberta Water System which gives people in the area their drinking and bathing water.
