John Ormsby (1720-1791) was a soldier and pioneer land developer of western Pennsylvania.

Military Career

John Ormsby was a Major in the French and Indian War. He fought under the command of General Forbes and George Washington in the battle to capture Fort Duquesne from the French. He was at Fort Pitt thereafter as paymaster.

Land Grant

John Ormsby received a land grant from George III in 1763, in return for his military service. Present-day communities that now occupy the land grant include Southside Flats (Pittsburgh), Mount Oliver (Pittsburgh), and Carrick (Pittsburgh)

Death

John Ormsby died intestate in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania in 1791, [cite web |title=Swayze v. Burke |url=http://supreme.justia.com/us/37/11/ |accessdate=7-05-2008] He is buried in Trinity Churchyard in downtown Pittsburgh.

Memorials and Legacy

Ormsby Street in Mount Oliver, Pennsylvania is named for John and his family. Mount Oliver itself is named for both his son and his father.
