- Anne Bogart
Anne Bogart (born 1951) is an American theatre director. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from
Bard College in 1974, followed by a Master of Arts degree fromNew York University 'sTisch School of the Arts in 1977. She co-founded the Saratoga International Theatre Institute withTadashi Suzuki in 1992, with an emphasis on creating new work, training young theatre artists, and international collaboration. Before founding theSITI Company , she was the president of theTheatre Communications Group . She is an Associate Professor atColumbia University where she heads the Graduate Directing Program. She also currently serves as Artistic Director of the SITI Company.She has won two Best Director Obie awards, one for "No Plays No Poetry But Philosophical Reflections Practical Instructions Provocative Opinions and Pointers From a Noted Critic and Playwright" (1988) and the other for "The Baltimore Waltz" (1990). In 1984 she was also honored with the Bessie Award for Choreographer/Creator for her work with "South Pacific".
Bogart helped to develop the theatrical technique of
Viewpoints , which she incorporates in much of her work. In addition to her contributions to "Anne Bogart: Viewpoints", she has written "A Director Prepares" (alluding to the title of Stanislavski's seminal acting manual, "An Actor Prepares "), "and then, you act", and co-authored "The Viewpoints Book", in which she outlines her theories of and approaches to making theatre.Bogart is the grand-daughter of Admiral
