The LHCb VELO

The Vertex Locator at LHCb is called the VELO. Its primary purpose is to provide high precision measurementsof the tracks of charged particles resulting from pp collisions at the LHC.

The detector operates at 7mm from the LHC beam when it is in its Physics positions. This implies an enormous flux of particles; thus the VELO has been designed to withstand integrated fluences of more than 1014p/cm2 / year for a period of about three years. The detector operates in vacuum and is cooled toapproximately -25C using a bi-phase CO2 system.

The VELO provides critical tracking information for the LHCb experiment.
