November 21 ,1865 inKnightstown, Indiana –January 3 ,1940 inLos Angeles, California ) was a professional baseball pitcher who played for the Kansas City Cowboys in 1889.In his only year in big league baseball, Park Swartzel made 48 appearances, starting 47 of them and completing 45 of his starts. He went 19-27 with a 4.32 ERA. In 410 1/3 innings of work, Swartzel allowed 481 hits, 334 runs, 197 earned runs and 21 home runs. He walked 117 batters and struck out 147, saving one game and finishing zero.
Swartzel led the league in home runs allowed and hits allowed. He was second in the league in saves and earned runs allowed, fourth in losses and wild pitches (35), fifth in walks per nine innings (2.57) and batters faced (1830), sixth in complete games, eighth in innings pitched, ninth in games and games started and tenth in strikeout to walk ratio (1.26).
Despite leading the Cowboys in every major category in 1889 (except for wins and saves, he tied with Jim Conway for the team lead in wins and with
John Sowders in saves), that would end up being his only season in major league baseball.He played his first game on
