Athletics
The Jonesboro athletic teams are known as the Golden Hurricane and have enjoyed a lot of success in all three major sports.
Football
The Golden Hurricane have won two Arkansas State Football Championships. The last coming in the sixties. The Hurricane have won several football conference championships. The last coming in 1987. However the Hurricane are one of the most successful programs in the state of Arkansas once being known as part of the Big Eight. The Hurricane in recent years have struggled in football finshing at (2-8) in 2007 which was one of the worst seasons in school history. This led to Head Football Coach Jim Devazier stepping down. The Jonesboro Public School District chose Randy Coleman former coach at cross-town school Valley View to lead the Hurricane football program. The Hurricanes main football rivals are West Memphis High School and cross-town rival Nettleton High School. The West Memphis series is pretty even. However the rivalry with the Nettleton Raiders has gone in favor of the Hurricane. The "Canes" lead the over all series (3-1) with JHS winning most with ease. The series with Nettleton is played at Arkansas State University's home stadium due to the high schools wanting to play the game on a neutral field. JHS is cold as ice dis year and WE READY FOR ALL YA'LL so bring it!!!
Basketball
Basketball is where the Hurricane has had a huge amount of success winning a total of 10 Arkansas State Basketball Chmapionships. With the most recent coming in 2007 when the Hurricane defeated AAAAAA East Conference rival Forrest City at the Hot Springs Convention Center. The year before that at the Alltel Arena in Little Rock, Arkansas the Hurricane fell to Little Rock Parkview High School which was a re-match of the 1994 state finals game in which the Hurricane won. The main basketball rivals for the "Canes" are West Memphis High School and Forrest City High School. The Hurricane have won several conference championships. With the most recent coming in 2008 when the Hurricane won the AAAAAA East Conference Championship. The "Canes" as the are known are led by their Head Coach Barry Pruit.
Baseball
The Hurricane while having never won a state championship in baseball has had many successful baseball teams. The Hurricane made it to the state championship game in 2005. The game was played at the University of Arkansas Baum Stadium. The Hurricane fell to former AAAAAA East Conference mate Sylvan Hills High School.
