The Abkhazian State University is the only university in Georgia's breakaway republic of Abkhazia. The first college in Abkhazia, "Sukhumi Agro-pedagogical Institute" was founded in 1932 and transformed into "Maxim Gorky Pedagogical Institute" next year.
