George Saru

George Saru (Gheorghe Şaru) (b.1920 - d.2003) was a Romanian-American painter, born in Romania at Checea, Timis County.

He never adhered to any current in fashion, but adopted an extremely original style, which through the ability of elaboration is impossible to miss. What sometimes looks abstract is a highly refined reality. Saru used to treat his shapes with the meticulosity of a portraitist. Color was his main concern.

Longtime professor at The Fine Art Academy in Bucharest, he influenced hundreds of his students into the modern art concept. He traveled much. The almost last 20 years of his career were spent in the United States. His artistic work is exposed in the world's great museums and is existent in countless private collections. He painted until his last days, even if he had been declared legally blind. He rests at Calvary Cemetery, New York.
