Huckitta is a pallasite meteorite found in Australia in 1924.

History

A mass of 1084 grams was found by Herbert Basedow in 1924 on Burt Plains (23°33'S, 133°52'E), about 17 km North from Alice Springs. This mass was called "Alice Springs".

In July 1937, the main mass of 1411.5 kg was found and recovered by Cecil Madigan [ [http://www.adb.online.anu.edu.au/biogs/A100367b.htm Online Edition of Astralian Dictionary of Biography, , Cecil Thomas (1889 - 1947)] at "Huckitta" (22°22'S, 135°46'E). Along with it were found also over 900 kg of iron shale. "Alice Springs" was then paired with it and considered a transported fragment.

Composition and classification

It is a pallasite related to Main Group Pallasite group. This pallasite is severely weathered: the metal is highly oxidized and trasformed into hematite and magnetite and Olivine crystals are often altered.Sometimes it is called an "anomalous" Main Group pallasite because, compared to other Main Group pallasites, has pretty high Ge and Ga contents, higher Pt, W, Ir, and lower Au content.
