Arthur W. Radford , (CINCPAC ) initially ordered a flag to be mounted on the wreck in 1950. [ [http://www.nps.gov/usar/historyculture/index.htm History of Memorial] ] Later theUSS Arizona Memorial was built around the shipwreck in 1961 and designated a national shrine onMay 30 ,1962 . The design of the memorial spans, but does not touch the landmarked remains below. The memorial is listed on theNational Register of Historic Places , but is not itself a landmark.References
