- USS Ranger (SP-237)
The fifth USS "Ranger" (SP-237) was an armed
yacht that served in theU.S. Navy from 1917 to 1919, and then in theDepartment of Commerce from 1919 to 1930."Ranger" was a steam-driven, steel-hulled yacht built by
Robert Jacob Shipyard , City Island,New York , in 1910. She was purchased by theU.S. Navy on22 June 1917 and commissioned as SP-237 on9 October 1917 , Lt. J. J. Smith, USNRF, in command.SP-237 operated as a patrol craft in the
Third Naval District until she was decommissioned on28 April 1919 and transferred to theCoast and Geodetic Survey Office in theDepartment of Commerce . She served with the Department of Commerce until26 November 1930 , when she was returned to the U.S. Navy. She was struck from the Navy List on4 September 1931 and sold on21 December 1931 .In 1932, registry of the vessel was transferred to
