St. Xavier's Church, Kottar
- St. Xavier's Church, Kottar
St. Xavier Church is a Roman Catholic shrine located in Kottar of Kanyakumari district in Tamil Nadu state, India. While Saint Xavier was at Kottar, he averted the invasion of Padagas on the people of Venad which was appreciated by the king, who grew closer to the Priest. In recognition of Xavier’s services, the king alloted land to him on which to construct a catholic church. There was already a church in 1544 in the same place, where St. Xavier’s church now stands.
Church records show that St. Xavier Church was built in 1600. In 1865, the Church was enlarged and the shrine of 'Our lady' was renovated and vaulted over. In 1930, the church was raised to the status of a Cathedral. An annual festival is celebrated during November – December lasting for 10 days.
