leukemia patient in "My Sister's Keeper " byJodi Picoult , which is about to be made into an eponymous movie. She was diagnosed withacute promyelocytic leukemia when she was two. Her sister Anna was selected byin vitro fertilization from various embryoes before being put into her mother Sara's womb, to be a genetic match donor after her elder brother Jesse tested inappropriate. She doesn't enjoy her (long) visits to the hospital and just wants a normal life. She enjoys watching soap operas and dancing. When she was 14, she had a fling with a fellow leukemia patient who later dies a few days after their first kiss.
However, in a "
Washington Post " review by Katherine Arie, Kate is described to be "as weak and wispy on the page as she's supposed to be in life." [ [http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/wp-dyn?pagename=article&contentId=A43483-2004Apr1 Review on "My Sister's Keeper" by the "Washington Post"] ]Plot
Anna has undergone numerous surgeries to donate her blood, bone marrow and more for her sister. When she turns 13 and has to donate her kidney, she sues her parents for the rights to her own body, which will mean that Kate will no longer receive her sister's tissues. Without a kidney donor, Kate will most likely die soon because of organ failure.
Towards the end, we discover that Kate was the one who initiated the lawsuit. After Anna gets in a car accident and becomes brain dead, Anna's attorney, after winning the case and giving Anna medical emancipation, decides to donate Anna's kidney to Kate.
In the epilogue, Kate describes how their family members deal with Anna's death in their both positive and negative ways. She has become a dance teacher while Jesse's a police officer and their father becomes an alcoholic. [ [http://www.jodipicoult.com/my-sisters-keeper.html "My Sister's Keeper" official site] ]
Family
Kate is often the "patient" who receives the most attention in the family. Jesse describes Anna as the peacemaker amid his arsons and Kate's illness. Kate's leukemia also means that she binds Anna to her, resulting in Anna not being able to attend a hockey camp when she was 11. Although Kate and Anna frequently argue, they make up and have a normal sisterly relationship.
Sara often gives Kate most of her attention, while Brian tries to be more fair in doling out his. During the lawsuit when Anna and her parents are opposing sides, Brian takes Anna to live in his fireman dorm.
