Thomas Scott Preston (born at

He studied in the
Episcopalian general seminary, located at Ninth Avenue and Twentieth Street, New York, where he was recognized as the leader of theHigh Church party. In 1846 he receiveddeacon 's orders, and served in this capacity at Trinity Church, the Church of the Annunciation in West Fourteenth Street, and at Holy Innocents,West Point .In 1847 he was ordained
presbyter byBishop Delancey of Western New York, his own bishop having refused to advance him to this order on account of his ritualistic views. He now served for some time at St. Luke's, Hudson Street, New York, hearing confessions and urging frequentHoly Communion .A student of the early history of the
Christian Church and theChurch Fathers , he gradually began to feel thebranch theory untenable. In a change of personal conviction, he was baptized and received into theCatholic Church on 14 November, 1849. In the autumn of 1850 he was ordained priest, and assigned to duty in the cathedral.In 1851 he was appointed pastor of
Yonkers with out-missions atDobbs Ferry andTarrytown . In 1853 he became secretary toArchbishop Hughes , and chancellor of the diocese. He was appointed pastor of St. Ann's in 1863, and was promoted in 1872 to be vicar-general. During the absence ofArchbishop Corrigan in 1890 he was administrator of the diocese.He founded and directed for many years the
Sisters of the Divine Compassion . HisAdvent andLent en conferences attracted hearers from all parts of the city.Works
