The Zookeeper's Wife is a non-fiction book written by Diane Ackerman.

Stuka bombers devastated Warsaw. The city's zoo got destroyed also. Zookeepers, Jan and Antonina Zabinski, began smuggling Jews into empty cages, after most of the zoo's animals died. Jan, who was active in the Polish Resistance, kept ammunition and explosives in the zoo. Antonina cared for both the zoo's human and animal inhabitants.

Reception

The Zookeeper's Wife has been reviewed by critics and authors. A few reviews are:

D.T. Max, of The New York Times, reviewed the book saying "This is an absorbing book, diminished sometimes by the choppy way Ackerman balances Antonina's account with the larger story of the Warsaw Holocaust."

Susie Linfied, of The Washington Post, reviewed the book saying "A lovely story ....that is simultaneously grave and exuberant, wise and playful. Ackerman has a wonderful tale to tell, and she tells it wonderfully."

On February 10, 2008, the book was number 13 on The New York Times non-fiction best seller list.
