] One is for advanced users. The other is for the general public, which is mainly mentioned in detail in this article.

If strong tremors are expected, an EEW for the general public is provided via media like TV and radio broadcastings.

Timings depend on conditions when a warning can be issued and received. Receiving a warning, a person may have a few tens of seconds at longest to take actions, but if the focus is too close there may be cases in which strong tremors come ahead.cite news

The Earthquake Early Warning is to make chances to mitigate damages by an earthquake: people may protect themselves at houses, at offices, near cliffs, railway workers may slow down the trains, and factory workers may stop the lines.

In preparation for strong tremors of an earthquake, it's important to "hold emergency response training" [cite news

How to react: dos and don'ts

For the present (as of June, 2008), presumably an Earthquake Early Warning in English is not available in most cases. However, to fully utilize the warning, background information is indispensible.

Listed below are tips on how to react to an Earthquake Early Warning, based on information from JMA and a Japanese public broadcaster [http://www.nhk.or.jp/ NHK] . [cite news

Principle

The most important is to "remain calm, and secure your personal safety based on your surroundings." You can have "only a matter of seconds" even if you are enough away form the focus.

Outdoors

*Keep away from collapsing block walls and vending machines.
*Be careful of falling signs and broken glass.
*Take shelter in a sturdy building if there is one close enough.

Near mountains/cliffs

*Watch out for rockfalls and landslides.

While driving

*Don’t slow down suddenly. Not every driver has received the warning.
*Turn on your hazard lights to alert other drivers, then slow down smoothly.
*If you are still moving when you feel the earthquake, pull safely over to the left and stop.

On Buses or Trains

*Hold on tight to a strap or a handrail.

At home

*Protect your head, away from large unstable furniture.
*Don’t rush outside.
*Open a door to keep way for evacuation.
*Don’t care about the gas in the kitchen.

In elevators

*Stop the elevator at the nearest floor and get off immediately.

In public buildings

If the attendants give you instructions, follow them.
*Remain calm.
*Protect your head, away from dangling lamps.
*Don’t rush to the exit or stairs.
