"Tanea zelandica", or the necklace shell, is a species of medium-sized sea snail, a predatory marine gastropod mollusc in the Family Naticidae, the moon shells.

Distribution

This subspecies is endemic to New Zealand.

Habitat

This naticid is found from shallow water to depths of up to 550 m.

hell description

The shell is smooth and solid, the parietal callus filling the umbilicus except for a crescentic groove.

The shell coloration is yellowish-fawn, with five narrow whitish spiral bands, regularly patterned with crescentic to chevron-shaped chestnut markings.

The maximum shell height is 33 mm, and width 31 mm.
