- Lev Alburt
Lev Osipovich Alburt (b.
August 21, 1945) is a chessgrandmaster. Alburt was born in Orenburg, Russia, and won the Ukrainian Chess Championshipthree times, from 1972 to 1974. In 1976 he earned the International Mastertitle, and in 1977 he became a GM. Alburt is also a well-respected chess writer.
Defecting to the
United Statesin 1979, Alburt led the U.S. Chess Olympiadteam in 1980 at Malta.
In the 1990 U.S. Chess Championship, Alburt defeated four-time U.S. champion
Yasser Seirawanwith the black pieces en route to winning the championship a third time:

Alburt is also the author of a series of highly praised and best selling chess books.
Alburt was once coached by fellow Ukrainian-Jewish chess player and chess journalist
Michael Faynberg. Alburt stayed with Faynberg for several months immediately after defecting to the United States.
