Blades Operations Center

Blades Operations Center

The Military Health Systems (MHS) Blades Operations Center (BOC) manages the Enterprise Blades Server (EBS) environment located at all United States Department of Defense (DoD) Military Treatment Facilites (MTF)'s. The contract was awarded to Apptis, Inc. in 2005, after which a rapid ramp-up and deployment of all systems took place within the following year. Currently the BOC manages over 90 sites with multiple medical mission-critical applications running on each.

The EBS architechture consists of dual Egenera Bladeframe ES's containing 2-way, 4-way , and 8-way Processor Blades (pBlades,) all connected to an EMC CX3-20 SAN via redundant EMC 9120 fiber switch links for high availability. Backup capability is achieved via an ADIC Scalar24k tape library, while network connectivity is achieved via direct links to each MTF core via a Cisco Catalyst 3560.

There are currently fourteen engineers staffing this 24x7 ops center, located in San Antonio, TX.
