Vorovoro

Vorovoro

Vorovoro is an island in the province of Macuata in the Vanua Levu Group of northern Fiji, 40 minutes away from the town of Labasa by boat.

The island is run by Tribewanted, a self-described "unique community tourism project" [http://www.tribewanted.com/about Tribewanted: Tribewanted ] ] founded by Ben Keene and Mark James, which has rented the island for a three-year period starting in September 2006. Up to 5000 people can join an online "tribe" and receive visiting rights to the island in what has been called both "a new Utopia" and "a clever timeshare scheme" [http://www.guardian.co.uk/travel/2007/mar/25/fiji.green.travelwebsites?page=all Simon Orr on the new tribe on Vorovoro | Travel | The Observer ] ] . The project places a heavy emphasis on community and sustainability, and at the end of the three-year lease period, the island and all the tribe members have built is scheduled to revert back to the local Fijian community.

The island and the project have received extensive media coverage [http://www.tribewanted.com/news Tribewanted: In the media ] ] , including a five-part BBC documentary called "Paradise or Bust" [http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice/pressreleases/stories/2007/11_november/20/bbctwo_ms.shtml BBC - Press Office - BBC Two Winter/Spring 2008: Programmes M-S ] ] .
