John David Marx was born in
Corinth, Mississippi on May 11, 1945. His father was killed in the U.S. Army four months before his birth. When John was 5, in 1950 he and his mother, Gerty moved toJackson, Mississippi to find work for Gerty. She found a job at a local factory. In May 1963 John graduated from Jackson High School and moved to Starkville, to attedMississippi State University . In 1967, John graduatedCum Laude from MSU, earning his M.S. inPolitical Science . In 1968 ,John was offered a job as a professor of Political Science atHarvard University , he accepted and moved toCambridge, MA , bringing his mother along. In 1974 John was fired from Harvard for 'having sex with a student'.Activist
In 1974 John and his mother moved to
Washington, D.C. , where John found work as an activist. In 1975 John joined the AmericanDemocrat Party . In 1976 John took on the task of volunteering for theJimmy Carter campaign. By 1978 John wasn't too happy at his job, and he applied for a job at an activism corporation, Days Activist. He was hired. In 1980, John began dating Amelia Woods, a former activist. And in 1981, John married Woods in a small-private ceremony. In 1981, John quit his job and moved to Spain by himself, leaving his mother and wife behind. And in 1982, John sent a letter to Amelia, requesting a divorce, stating "I am unhappy and I have newly found feelings, for a gay man I have met while on this trip, I will not return home until the divorce is over." In January 1984, the divorce was over, Amelia was rewarded everything. In July 1987, John moved back to Washington and began to work as an independent activist for gay rights. In 1987, John also announced he would run for Mayor of Washington, D.C., he was widely defeated in the election. Then in 1989, John broke off the relationship with his lover and began dating a female waitress, Kimberly Haynes. In 1990, Kimberly and John were married. In 1991, John announced he would be running for U.S. President as an Independent in 1992, but he later revised this comment and said he would run if only he raised $2 million, the money was never raised. Then in 1993, John and Kimberly moved toOak Bluffs, Massachusetts , where Kimberly found work as a teacher, John no longer worked as an activist.Politics
In 1995, John announced he would run for
Massachusetts's 10th congressional district Representative. He was defeated, 59% to 41%. Then in 1996, John donated $25,000 to theBill Clinton campaign, and he was later named one of Clinton's campaign officers. In 1998, John announced he would run for the 2000 Presidential Election as an Independent. He ran for the office, but only attracted 31,000 voters and 0 delegates. In 2002, John appeared on theJay Leno Show to talk about his plans to run again in 2004. The show was watched by millions and when a poll was taken at the end of the show on the internet, asking watchers if they would vote for John Marx, 65% of the voters said yes, and 30% said maybe. So on September 15, 2003, John announced he would seek the nomination for U.S. President as a Democrat.2004 Presidential Campaign
Shortly after announcing his candidacy, John was endorsed by Hollywood producer
Michael Moore , and two other endorsements soon followed. By December 2003, John had raised $5 million in campaign funds. In the Iowa Caucus, John only received 110 votes, and at the New Hampshire primary, John only received 112 votes. On February 12, 2004 John withdrew from the race and endorsed SenatorJohn Kerry .Life After Candidacy
In March 2005 John Marx divorced his wife and moved to Toronto, Canada. But he moved back to the U.S. three months later, settling in Millport, Alabama. John remarried his first wife in 2006, and they reside in
Millport, Alabama . Marx works as an at-home computer analyst.
