Tony Hart (theater)

Tony Hart (born Anthony J. Cannon, October 26, 1844, New York, New York - June 6, 1911, New York, New York) was an American theater composer and theater manager, best known for working with Ned Harrigan, in the late 19th century. Together they became a fixture at the Theatre Comique in New York City by the mid-1870s. They began their team in Chicago, then had their big break at Boston's Howard Athenaeum. [Cullen, pg. 484] Later in the decade, Hart and Harrigan began moving from the variety show toward musical theater, and became the first major Americans to use ethnicity as a major component of character development. [Chase, pg. 365]
