Vandœuvre-lès-Nancy (Vandoeuvre Near Nancy) is a French commune, situated in the Meurthe-et-Moselle "département" in the Lorraine "région". Its inhabitants are called "Vandopériens".

Geography

With 32,048 inhabitants (1999), Vandœuvre is the second-largest "commune" of the Meurthe-et-Moselle "département", after the capital Nancy, of which it is a suburb. These two cities belong to the same agglomeration: the "Communauté urbaine du Grand Nancy".

Orthography

The grave accent ("l'accent grave") is used on the letter "e" to indicate that it is pronounced IPA| [ɛ] , as in "manière" ("way"). It also serves to distinguish the word "les," meaning "the," from "lès," meaning "near." (Petit Larousse, 1967, p. 599.) The ligature œ is represented in English by separate letters.
