Stewart Sanderson

Stewart Antony Sanderson (born April 10, 1983 in Whitehaven, Cumbria) is an English rugby league winger and hooker who currently plays for Gateshead Thunder in the National League Two.

Playing career

Sanderson started his career aged 8 with Egremont Rangers but soon after switched clubs to play for his beloved Wath Brow Hornets, winning the National Cup during his time there. He stayed with Wath Brow until he signed a month-to-month contract with Gateshead Thunder in May 2007. After a successful trial period Sanderson signed a 1 year deal with Thunder in November 2007. He is a former North East Students Rugby League, England Students Rugby League and Great Britain Students Rugby League international, touring Australia in the summer of 2006 with the latter.

Personal life

Sanderson currently resides in Middlesbrough where he was a University of Teesside Sports Therapy graduate, with five of his close friends. Sanderson will be moving to Wakefield, West Yorkshire in July 2008 with one of his current housemates in order to start a career in Sports Therapy.
During his four years at the University of Teesside Sanderson was nominated for University of Teesside Sportsman of the Year three times, eventually succeeding in his third attempt for the academic year 2006-2007.
Sanderson is a keen admirer of tattoos and has 3 on his body. He has one on his triceps which reads "the hornets" in arabic as a sign of his affection for the Wath Brow Hornets Rugby League Club.
He has a series of Chinese symbols down his Cervical and Thoracic spine and has "Mam" in cantonese at the base of his back. Sanderson was given a british racing green Citroen AX by Gateshead Thunder in order to travel between Gateshead International Stadium and Middlesbrough. In April 2008 Sanderson bought a midnight blue Alpha Romeo 147.
His father Barry, is a keen breeder of racing pigeons as well as being a devout follower of rugby league. He has an older brother, Scott who shares his love of Rugby playing for Whitehaven A-Team Rugby League. He currently coaches the Whitehaven Rugby Union team. Sanderson also has a younger sister Amanda.
