Henry Avray Tipping (1855-1933) was a British writer and
garden designer .He read modern history at Oxford University, and became a contributor to Country Life magazine. He also worked as a garden designer in the Arts and Crafts style, and was a friend of
Gertrude Jekyll andHarold Peto . His garden design works include the walled garden atChequers , and several in his home county ofMonmouthshire . These include Mathern Palace, Mounton House, High Glanau Manor, and Wyndcliffe Court. His gardens were characterised by divided compartments with sculpted yew hedging, topiary birds and animals, long grass bowling greens, lush planting and wild areas.
