Samuel Edward Marsden

Samuel Edward Marsden(1832-1912)was the inaugural Bishop of Bathurst [ [http://www.adb.online.anu.edu.au/biogs/A050242b.htm AOB on-line] ] . Born into an eminent clerical family [His grandfather was The Rev Samuel Marsden, formerly Senior Chaplain at Parramatta:The Times, Friday, Oct 18, 1912; pg. 1; Issue 40033; col A "Deaths Rt Rev Samuel Edward Marsden " ] ,educated at Trinity College, Cambridge [“Who was Who” 1897-1990 London, A & C Black, 1991 ISBN 071363457X] and ordained in 1855, his first posts were curacies within the Hereford Diocese. From 1861 until 1869 he was Vicar of Bengeworth when he was elevated to the Colonial Episcopate. Widely praised for his “helpful teaching, sympathy and liberal gifts [Times Obituary (Ibid)] ” he resigned his post in 1885 [Returning to England, he continued to serve as an Assistant Bishop within the Gloucester Diocese Who was Who(ibid)] . After his death a memorial was erected to his memory in St. Andrew's Cathedral, Sydney [ [http://protocat.nla.gov.au/Record/1596170 Memorial details] ] .
