Keshavan Maslak, who also performs under the
stage name Kenny Millions (b. February 26, 1947,Detroit ) is an Americanjazz saxophonist, clarinetist, mini guitarist andpunk rock performance artist Kenneth Keshavan Maslak was born in downtown Detroit, Michigan to a family of
Ukrainian immigrants who worked at theFord Motor Company . Kenny began studying music from his grandfather at the age of five on themandolin , and then started on theclarinet andsaxophone and the age of six. He began working professionally from the age of 12. While attendingCass Technical High School , Kenny became a student ofLarry Teal andDonald Sinta . After high school Maslak studied music and psychology at theUniversity of Michigan ,Eastern Michigan University andNorth Texas State University where he studied music composition withMartin Mailman in the late 1960s. Following this he played withMotown touring bands and many otherjazz andR&B bands. After two years living inSan Francisco and playing withPhilip Wilson ,Ray Anderson , David Murray, andCharles Moffett , Maslak moved toNew York City in 1972 and participated in the New York loft scene during the 1970's, where he worked with experimental musicians such asPhilip Glass andLaurie Anderson , all the while composing his own music and inventing the Hum Ha Horn. From 1978 to 1981 Maslak lived inEurope , where he played inavant-garde jazz circles and recorded several titles forLeo Records . He also formed apunk rock -free jazz group, Loved by Millions, in which he began to use thepseudonym Kenny Millions. He returned to New York, then moved toFlorida in 1986. In 1989 he and his wife, Junko Maslak, opened up asushi restaurant/music club, Sushi Blues Cafe. During the 1990's Kenny collaborated withPaul Bley (1992-93),Katsuyuki Itakura (1994), andSergey Kuryokhin (1996). Other credits include work withSam Rivers ,Sunny Murray ,Yoshihide Otomo ,Roland Kirk ,Han Bennink ,Rhys Chatham ,Derek Bailey ,Dr. John andChet Baker at various times during his career.Aside from playing the saxophone and clarinet, Kenny Millions developed a concept in which he performs the
mini strat guitar at the same time as performing on the horns. He refers to his current music as "PunkJazzNoise" and he continues to tour the world with his one-man-show.Discography
