Berta Zuckerkandl-Szeps (
April 13 ,1864 -October 16 ,1945 ) was an Austrian writer, journalist, and critic.Berta Szeps was the daughter of liberal newspaper publisher
Moritz Szeps and was raised inVienna . She was married to the anatomistEmil Zuckerkandl .From end of the nineteenth century until 1938, she led an important
literary salon inVienna , originally from a villa inDöbling later in theOppolzergasse area. Many famous Viennese artists and personalities includingGustav Klimt ,Gustav Mahler , Max Reinhardt,Arthur Schnitzler and others frequented the salon. Protégés of the salon includeAnton Kolig andSebastian Isepp of theNötsch Circle . Her sister Sofie was married toPaul Clemenceau , the brother of the French PresidentGeorges Clemenceau , and, therefore, she also had good ties to Parisien artistic circles. She also translated a number of plays from French to German and was a cofounder of theSalzburg Music Festival .In 1938, she emigrated to
Paris and later toAlgiers .Works
