Sizeflation

Sizeflation

The decrease in consumer package size for the same price resulting in inflation due to size reduction.

"A half gallon of ice cream is now packaged as 48oz. It's costing me 25% more due to sizeflation."

In an effort to maintain costs to consumers, manufacturers are more and more looking at reducing the package size while keeping the price the same. While it may be a small amount the price increase may not be. A .5 ounce change on a bar of soap that was 3.5 ounces is about a 14% price increase.

Since the increases can be 10 - 30 percent overnight the resulting increases due to sizeflation can impact the consumer greatly.
