- Glenn Spearman
Glenn Spearman (February 14, 1947 - October 8, 1998) was an American
jazz tenor saxophonist. He was specifically associated withfree jazz andexperimental music .Spearman was active in
Oakland, California from the late 1960s, but moved toParis in 1972, where he founded an ensemble called Emergency. This group recorded several albums onBrain Records in the 1970s, performed on radio and television in France, and appeared at the festival inAvignon . He spent time as an artist-in-residence inRotterdam and touring through Europe before returning to the United States in 1983. Following his return he worked in theCecil Taylor Unit, working primarily out ofSan Francisco , though he performed on both sides of the Atlantic through the 1980s. In the 1990s, he led a Double Trio which included Larry Ochs,William Winant , andLisle Ellis as sidemen; this ensemble played at theMonterey Jazz Festival and theVancouver International Jazz Festival . They were also commissioned for a piece by theMove Dance Theater , which was performed atLaney College . He worked with theRova Saxophone Quartet and with filmmakerLynn Kiby , in addition to teaching atMills College . He died ofcancer in 1998.Discography
