He started his career at Norwegian club Rosenborg. He played for Rosenborg from 1983 to 1986.
Bratseth was transferred to Werder Bremen in 1986. He was an instant success in the Bundesliga. Bratseth and Werder Bremen won the German league in 1987/88. He was important when his club was runners-up in the
German Cup twice in a row, in 1989 and 1990, and finally winners in 1991, beating1. FC Köln in the final.Bratseth's finest moment came when Werder Bremen won the European
Cup Winners' Cup in 1992, in a 2-0 victory againstAS Monaco FC .Werder Bremen and Bratseth won the German League again in the season of 1992/93. At the end of his career his knees was not what they used to be, and needed injections to play without pain, something he did in his last professional games at the

International career

During the
Football World Cup 1994 , Bratseth was captain of the Norwegian squad. Their third and last game against Ireland proved to be his last international game.Managing
When he retired, Bratseth became
chairman andgeneral manager of Rosenborg, forming a successful partnership with coachNils Arne Eggen . Rosenborg has been the dominant team in theNorwegian Premier League ever since Bratseth was appointed.Bratseth was actually registered as a player when he started his job at Rosenborg, and since Rosenborg didn't have 25 players in their first team squad to be registered for the Champions League, Bratseth was included as a back up. Even though he didn't want to play, he agreed to sit on the bench for one game in case of "emergency".
Bratseth quit his job at Rosenborg in 2007, leaving it to
