Plot summary

Max, an eight-year-old boy whose family has just moved to Yorkshire, discovers some old toy soldiers in the attic. He and his sister Jane are surprised and delighted to find that they can come to life. He gradually learns that they once belonged to the Brontës, who wrote stories about their adventures. The soldiers are brave, intelligent and very independent, so the children are determined that they should not fall into the hands of collectors to be put on display.
