Scacciata

Scacciata

Scacciata can be any of several types of Sicilian dishes.

One haute cuisine version is a provolone cheese-filled pastry in a bread dough pie crust. [ [http://italianfood.about.com/od/cheesedishes/r/blr1401.htm Sicilian Cheese Pie - Scacciata ] ] . The simpler peasant version is much more like a calzone and is a pizza dough crust folded over and filled with either spinach, broccoli, potatoes and onions, and possibly sausage, and with a small amount of tomato sauce draped on the outside.

The second version of scacciata is most common in America, and is a local food in Middletown, Connecticut, where a handful local restaurants prepare scacciata.
