Awards
The Music department performed considerably well in National Band Competitions, regularly winning. The Senior Wind Band won gold in the last two British Festivals in which the band was entered. In the late 1970s, school show director, Dorothy Dey, and musical director, Matt McInnes, (both teachers in the Maths department) raised the bar in terms of high quality school shows, including Oliver!, Oklahoma! and South Pacific. This tradition was continued by speech and drama teacher/director, Liz Nixon, and music teacher/musical director, Betty Pearson, in the 1980s. Particular successes of the 1980s included Godspell, The Pajama Game, Kiss Me Kate and Calamity Jane.
Studio 32
A teachers' strike in 1985 led to the establishment of Studio 32, an amateur theatre company that has since grown to be the leading community theatre company in the area. Studio 32 was named after the drama classroom in the school (A32) by the father of one of the founder members in a competition.
