Hilary Synnott

Hilary Synnott

Sir Hilary Synnott KCMG was Regional Coordinator of the Coalition Provisional Authority (CPA) in Southern Iraq from July 2003 until January 2004, before retiring. He has recently published a book about his time there called Bad Days In Basra.

Sir Hilary replaced the Dane Ambassador Ole Wøhlers Olsen who had who had been critical of the lack of support for his reconstruction efforts.

Sir Hilary's career has included roles as British High Commissioner to Pakistan from 2000 until 2003 and Deputy High Commissioner to India from 1993 to 1996. He served at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office as Director for South and South East Asian Affairs from 1996 until 1998. He has also had roles at the British missions Amman, Paris and Bonn.

Earlier in life he was a Royal Navy officer serving as a submariner. He was awarded an MA in electrical engineering from Cambridge University.
