Paisley, Renfrewshire , in 1939. He was ordained as aRoman Catholic priest inRome in 1963. He had been involved in broadcasting for more than 40 years. Fitzsimmons had also served as therector of thePontifical Scots College in Rome. In addition to his work atBBC Scotland , Fitzsimmons was known for his sometimes controversial criticisms of theCatholic Church .Fitzsimmons died on
May 17 ,2008 , inGourock after a long illness at the age of 68.Maggie Cunningham , the director of programs forBBC Scotland , said of Fitzsimmons, "He was a big man with a big personality, erudite and compassionate, and anybody who met or worked with Father John would benefit from his life-enhancing qualities."References
