Prince Wendell White

Prince Wendell White

Prince Wendell Winston Walter White is a fictional character in the Hallmark Entertainment's and NBC's 2000 Mini-series The 10th Kingdom by Simon Moore.

Fictional character history

Wendell is the son of King Whitney and Queen Ashley of the Fourth Kingdom . His mother was poisoned by the villainous Christine Lewis who subsequently seduced Wendell’s father into marrying her before killing him as well. Christine then assumed the Throne, becoming Wendell’s stepmother. She then began poisoning him as well but the Royal Physicians tended to Wendell and discovered that he was being poisoned. An investigation was conducted and Christine’s horribly wicked plan was exposed. Christine was arrested and incarcerated in the Snow White memorial prison. Wendell naturally ascended the Throne when he came of age.

tory of the 10th Kingdom

Wendell is first introduced on his way to Beantown, a village in the southernmost corner of the 4th Kingdom to publicly accept a new throne made for his coronation. Prince Wendell and his old and faithful manservant, Giles, were making a brief stop at the Snow White Memorial Prison on a courtesy visit. Unbeknownst to them, the Troll King - Relish, had broken into the prison to break out his children and had also been enchanted into releasing Christine.

After Giles is killed by the Trolls, Prince Wendell is attacked in the entrance hall, and for the first time in seven years, comes face to face with his evil step-mother who has used her empty time in the cell to enchant a dog with magic. She casts a body-switching spell on the prince; Prince Wendell transforms into a dog, and the dog is turned into an exact replica of Prince Wendell.

Now imprisoned in the form of a dog, Prince Wendell flees from his step-mother and the Trolls, heading deeper into the prison, and winds up in the cellars where he accidentally activates a misplaced Magic-Mirror, which becomes a portal to another world, the world being the Planet Earth. He goes through the portal and finds himself in Central Park - New York City where he collides with a young lady's bike. After waking up from the crash, Prince Wendell follows the young woman – Virginia Lewis (10th Kingdom) - to her job at a restaurant, where Virginia's co-worker - Candy Fitzsimmons - coincidentally dubs the dog “Prince”.

Soon after being hidden by Virginia in a storage room, 'Prince' gets Virginia's attention by spelling "DANGER" in flour - and Virginia discovers that the dog 'Prince' can understand what she's saying, and decides to leave work early. While in New York, Prince is dependent on Virginia to guide and protect him; Prince follows Virginia home to her apartment building, where they discover that the three Trolls are there waiting having been sent by Christine to retrieve Wendell (and all too interested in Virginia's and her father's shoes.)

After Virginia outsmarts the three dim-witted Trolls, and traps them in an old and broken-down elevator, she heads off to the only place she can stay, at her grandmother's apartment. Prince is right behind her and they both spend the night there. The next morning, after Virginia encounters Wolf, a creature part man, part Wolf who was also sent by Christine in case the Trolls failed. The two flee to Central Park, where Virginia tries to shake off Prince for her own safety, as nothing but strange things had happened since they first crossed paths but Prince is reluctant to leave as he has no other allies. Matters are made worse when Virginia's father shows up in Central Park in handcuffs.

Prince tells Tony that they are in terrible danger and that they have to find the Magic-Mirror - the way back to his world. Virginia and Tony Lewis follow Prince Wendell through the Magic-Travelling-Mirror to the world of the Nine Kingdoms, where in the Snow White Memorial Prison, Prince tells Tony (who can communicate with him) "I am Prince Wendell, grandson to the late Snow White and soon to be crowned King of the 4th Kingdom.”" The three enter Christine’s vacated prison cell in the hopes that there may be clues to what she was doing the three Trolls suddenly burst in, abduct Virginia and trap Tony and Prince Wendell in the cell. Tony was still handcuffed, unable to try and stop them, and Prince Wendell was too deeply embarrassed about being a dog to have helped anyway. After they are both discovered in Christine’s cell, the Prison Governor questions Tony about how Christine escaped and does not believe that the dog is really Prince Wendell. Eventually, he has Tony locked up and plans to poison the dog.

Wendell and “Anthony”, as Wendell has taken to addressing Tony, try to escape from the prison before “Prince” ends up eating the poisoned food that the Governor leaves for him. “Prince” gets “Anthony” the Governor's master key. Tony makes an impression of it in a soap bar and makes a copy, but he is discovered before they can escape, and the two are punished. When Prince Wendell overhears the Governor and the Warders talking and deciding to have the cellar cleared out in the hopes that they can find out if Christine escaped that way, Prince Wendell puts Tony Lewis's name on the work detail, because the Magic-Mirror was still down in the cellars.

When Virginia and Wolf sneak back into the Snow White Memorial Prison, via Magic-Shoes that render them invisible, to get Tony, Prince Wendell and the Magic-Mirror, Virginia and Wolf find Prince Wendell first - who leads them to Tony's cell. Tony, had by then, already escaped with two other inmates through a tunnel out of their cell, and Virginia, Wolf and 'Prince' go through the tunnel, catch up with Tony, and discover that the Magic-Mirror has already left - via boat sailing way by Acorn the Dwarf.

Wendell is later abducted by Christine and taken to the Royal Palace which the evil sorceress has made her residence. She has been grooming the lookalike of Wendell to masquerade as the real person so that she can use him to take over the throne. Virginia however finds the Palace with the use of her Magic Mirror. In the final battle, Virginia destroys Christine, saving Wendell who with his vicious stepmother dead regains his true form and his Throne.

Personality

Wendell is a spoiled, arrogant and haughty individual when the miniseries begins but over the course of the story as he journeys with Virginia, Tony and Wolf he becomes less selfish and puts himself in harms way to assist his friends. His self-centred personality could be the result of a difficult childhood as the result of his parents being murdered and he himself almost dying. Nevertheless by the end of the series he has become a kind and selfless individual as the result of his experiences.
