Indian Medical Association

The Indian Medical Association (IMA), the national organization of “Doctors of Modern Scientific System of Medicine”, was organized in 1928, and currently IMA has around 100,000 members belonging to different branches of medical profession and function through a network of more than 1700 local branches, located in different part of India.

Background

Before the establishment of the Indian Medical Association(IMA), some of the members of the profession were members of the British Medical Association, which then had some branches in the-then Undivided India. In 1918 Allahabad Medical Association (AMA) was established as a registered body of Indian doctors in the city of Allahabad, the then capital of United Province(now called Uttar Pradesh)of undivided India during the British rule. After the Indian Medical Association was organized in 1928, an agreement was struck between both the Associations, and an understanding was reached that the British Medical Association will not have any branch in India, and both the Associations got mutually affiliated. The Allahabad Medical Association also started functioning as the Allahabad (city) branch of Indian Medical Association;but as it was legally established and registerd ten years before the parent body itself;it is the only branch of IMA having the privilege of using officially its original name of 'Allahabad Medical Association'( [http://www.imaallahabad.com/about.php] ) till date, unlike all other branches of IMA in India, which are designated merely as the city/state branches/chapters of the IMA.
