brand tuna , this was in fact the longest continuously-operatedsalmon cannery in theUnited States , from itsconstruction in 1898 until decommissioning in 1980. The canned salmonindustry was a cornerstone of the Northwest's resource-basedeconomy from the late 1860s until afterWorld War II . Amidst seasonal and declining salmon stocks, the cannery diversified into tuna in the 1930s. Due to structural deterioration, thebuilding was slated fordemolition in 1991, and it burned in 1993.References
