Protein Sparing Modified Fast

Protein Sparing Modified Fast

The Protein Sparing Modified Fast, or PSMF, is a rapid weight loss diet usually used for the morbidly obese, and less commonly by bodybuilders.

Methodology

A PSMF is a very low calorie diet. The dieter eats no more than 1000 kcal a day, usually between 600-800. The majority of these come strictly from high quality protein. No carbohydrates are permitted, and very little fats.

One who is on a PSMF must consume enough protein to maintain lean body mass, which depending on the individual, can be between 80-220g. Also, high quality essential fatty acids must be taken as a supplement, along with multivitamin and multimineral supplements.

The dieter is permitted any amount of low-glycemic vegetables, as long as calories stay within the limits provided.

Results

PSMF is a rapid fat loss protocol. In one study given over a six week period, 15 obese patients were found to have lost 31.8lbs of body fat on average, while maintaining lean body mass. Dangers

As with any extreme calorie restricted diet, there is a real danger of starvation, if not carefully executed with the help of a medical professional. Since the dieter is in an extreme energy deficit, the body will eventually shut down its metabolism due to lack of leptin, which signals the body to start conserving energy any way possible. A common method of alleviating this problem is to have periodic sessions of carbohydrate-rich over-maintenance eating, from every two days to each week to every two months, which restart the hormonal cycle and metabolism.
