John Philipps, 1st Viscount St Davids

John Philipps, 1st Viscount St Davids

John Wynford Philipps, 1st Viscount St Davids PC (30 May 1860 – 28 March 1938) was a British peer and former Liberal Member of Parliament (MP) for Mid Lanarkshire 1888–1894 and Pembrokeshire 1898–1908.

Personal life

Lord St Davids was married twice. Firstly, on 14 February 1888 to Nora Gerstenberg. She became Lady St Davids and then Viscountess St Davids when her husband was awarded these titles respectively. The couple had two children:
*Capt. Hon. Colwyn Erasmus Arnold Philipps (11 December 1888 – 13 May 1915)
*Capt. Hon. Roland Erasmus Philipps (27 February 1890 – 7 July 1916)

Both of these sons died during the First World War and thus the eldest predeceased his father; hence he did not inherit his title.

Lord St Davids' second marriage was to Elizabeth Frances Abbey-Hastings on 27 April 1916 following the death of his first wife on 30 March 1915. She became Viscountess St Davids upon marriage. They had two children:
* The Hon. Jestyn Reginald Austin Plantagenet Philipps (19 February 1917–1991); 2nd Viscount St Davids (from 1938)
* The Hon. Lelgarde De Clare Elizabeth Philipps (23 September 1918–); became The Hon. Lelgarde Evans upon marriage on 19 June 1950 [ [http://www.thepeerage.com/p3300.htm#i32995 thePeerage.com - Person Page 3300 ] ]
