History

The college was built in 1969 as a comprehensive co-educational school. It was made a technology college in 1994.In the mid to late nineties, the college suffered an arson attack that destroyed the interior of the "New Block" which housed the arts and languages departments. Temporary buildings were erected to house these departments.

In the report of the Ofsted Inspection carried out on 12-13 October 2005, the school was rated as inadequate, although the teaching was rated as good. Callaghan was succeeded by Matthew Longden in September 2005. In a later Ofsted Inspection carried out on 1–2 November 2006, the school received a "Good" grade and was said to have improved a great deal since the appointment of the new headteacher who was described as "outstanding." This was seen in an outstanding information and communication technology (ICT) lesson where students evaluated how websites are used to promote leisure facilities such as Thorpe Park. In this lesson, all groups of students, including average boys, made good progress with their learning because they found the tasks interesting and challenging and had to find things out for themselves."

Facilities

Applemore College is able to offer additional sports facilities to students due to close links with the Applemore Health and Leisure Centre next door. These include swimming, volleyball and trampolining.
