Costume Designer

Lisa Marie Trump has been designing costumes for theatre, dance, film and television since 1994. With a passion for character and period as well as the bizarre, Lisa's designs frequently explore fusions of period, often with a thought-provoking twist and always with sensitivity and humour.

History

Lisa Marie Trump trained in costume design at Wimbledon School of Art [http://www.wimbledon.arts.ac.uk/courses/32697.htm] . After graduating she began work as a freelance costume designer and maker for small-scale theatre productions such as "The Rape Of Lucretia" opera at Battersea Arts Centre directed by Loveday Ingram and "The Snow Queen" tour by Innercity.
Lisa worked as Design Assistant on several productions for the innovative Design Workshop in Carshalton (associated with the Charles Cryer Studio Theatre) under Suzanne Aliss wing before being employed as Costume Technician for Legoland Windsor. She spent the gloriously hot summer of 1998 making costumes and dressing up to 8 performances a day of Legolands circus show, stunt show, castle theatre show and puppet shows which proved to be an invaluable experience and lead to further freelance design projects in genres such as acrobatics, musicals and puppetry.
The opportunity arose in 1999 to spend a season at Glyndebourne Festival Opera expanding her skills as a tailor, where she tailored modern and periodwear for adults and children on productions including "Manon Lescaut", "Rodelinda", "The Bartered Bride" and "La Climenza De Tito". By the end of the season Lisa was offered the position of Head Of Costume for the Arts Educational School which gave her the opportunity to design up to 30 productions a year for talented young performers and to run a busy department of skilled costumiers. Lisa spent four years as Head of Costume designing full-scale plays, ballets, musical theatre productions, variety, farce, contemporary dance, tap, jazz dance and period drama and thrillers with many of the flagship productions containing over 200 costumes each. She also designed and supervised the costumes for the Arts Educational Schools drama, dance and poetry performance "The Child In The Window" which headlined the 2001 Festival Of Remembrance [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Festival_of_Remembrance#Festival_of_Remembrance] at Londons Royal Albert Hall and which was broadcast on BBC Television.
In 2003, a move to central London gave Lisa the prospect of further exploring design for dance as she became employed at the UKs leading centre for contemporary dance: Laban [http://www.laban.org/php/news.php?id=278&item=] . Here she designed and made costumes for some of the worlds leading contemporary choreographers including Athina Vahla [http://www.athinavahla.com/] , Rashpal Singh Bansal and Victor Quijada as well as working closely with Masters and Degree students of dance to help develop their own design skills.
Lisa juggled a busy profession designing for contemporary dance with an expanding freelance career which brought opportunities in ever-widening fields of design including designing the costumes for a competitor in the notorious annual 3000 mile, 6-day cross-continent car race The Gumball Rally for two years (who went on to be joint winner in 2006); designing a ballet for the iconic ballet dancer and choreographer Irek Mukhamedov; a wacky physical theatre stilt-walking piece for Full Tilt in London and Europe; working on costumes for film (including "Gumball 3000: The Movie") and television; designing a high-diving, jetski-driving, punch-throwing stunt show when Legoland Windsor invited her back this time as designer of their shows; and designing all the flamboyant uniforms for the new flagship "Marriott Hotel West India Quay" [http://www.marriott.com/hotels/hotel-photos.mi?marshaCode=loncw&pageID=HWHOM] in Londons Docklands.
Not one to remain far from traditional theatre for long, Lisa went on to work at the Royal Shakespeare Company, where she co-ordinates their busy costume department as well as continuing her freelance costume design career. To date Lisa has designed, made and supervised the costumes on over 80 productions ranging from one-man shows to casts of 250, from single bespoke costumes to musical theatre productions containing over 400 costumes.
Outside the world of costume design, Lisa also enjoys writing. She has written two plays: a new one-woman bitter-sweet comedy entitled "Still Life With Mango" [http://www.freewebtown.com/dreamproductions/productions.htm] which appeared as a finalist in Lost Theatres New Writing Competition [http://losttheatre.moonfruit.com/#/oneactfestival/4516682857] at the Diorama Theatre in London; and an adaptation of Mary Shelleys "Frankenstein" which was performed at the Victoria Hall Theatre in Tring. She was a regular contributor of topical comedy sketches and song parodies for the monthly comedy variety show The Treason Show [http://www.treasonshow.co.uk/home.shtml] at Brightons Komedia Theatre; and Lisa has also written numerous pieces of verse, haiku and short stories which have been published in the UK and been performed the Poetry Cafe in Soho [http://www.writewords.org.uk/members/show_profile.asp?member_id=649] .

As joint Artistic Director of Dream Productions Theatre Company [http://www.freewebtown.com/dreamproductions/thecompany.htm] alongside Kevin Russell, Lisa has helped develop their touring productions, designed and painted scenic backdrops, edited scripts and designed publicity material, as well as being involved directly in promotional activity such as radio interviews.

Lisa is passionate about introducing young people to a professional approach to theatre and the diversity of theatre skills they can develop. As well as spending four years working with 8 to 18 year olds at the Arts Educational School, Lisa worked with the National Youth Music Camp [http://www.stables.org/Learning/music_camps] at Dankworth and Laines Stables Theatre near Milton Keynes, introducing youngsters to costuming, puppet-making, and also co-directing with Kevin Russell their 2003 operetta "The Tinderbox".
